Start with a square piece of paper, colored or plain will work just fine. Fold the paper in half diagonally, then fold it in half again diagonally so that you have four triangles on the sheet. Unfold the sheet and fold each corner into the center point where the folds intersect. Flip the paper over and repeat this process on the other side.
Next, fold one of the flaps over towards you, creasing it well at its base before doing so, then do this with each flap until they are all folded towards you creating an octagon shape.
